Anngene Gibbs

The Celebration of Life service for Mrs. Anngene Culbreth Gibbs, who passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2025, will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at Arlington Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Hadden and Dr. Van Power officiating. Visitation will be at two o’clock on Sunday, June 1 at Arlington Baptist Church. The service will begin at three o’clock, with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery. The life she lived exemplified the sincere love she had for her God, her church, her family, her school, her students, and her friends.

Mrs. Gibbs was the daughter of Larkin F. Culbreth, Sr. and Birdie Sheppard Culbreth of Edison, Georgia. She had one brother, Larkin Francis Culbreth, Jr.

She graduated from Edison High School, received her Bachelor’s degree at Georgia Teachers College, and her Master’s degree in guidance and counseling at Valdosta State College.

Having taught school for fifty-two years, she began her career at Albany Junior High. She also taught at Arlington Elementary School, Edison High School, Calhoun County High School, and Southwest Georgia Academy, where she taught eleventh and twelfth grade English, Speech, and Journalism, and served as counselor. While at Southwest Georgia Academy, she sponsored the first one-act play, yearbook, and newspaper. She sponsored the senior class and directed 40 graduations. She was named STAR Teacher eight times.

Mrs. Gibbs was a member of Edison Baptist Church, and when she married Dr. Marcus Gibbs, Arlington veterinarian, she joined Arlington Baptist Church. While there, she was a member of the choir, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and a member of several committees.

Mrs. Gibbs is survived by her children Angelyn Gay Gibbs Williams and Marcus Culbreth Gibbs, both of Arlington; grandsons Wesley Michael Williams (Maria), Russell Thomas Williams (Caitlin); great grandchildren Tyler Benjamen, Ava Grace, Bo Matthew, Colt David,Jet Thomas, Cooper James, Anna Gibbs, and Woods Easom Williams; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, sisters-in-law Marjorie Gibbs Talley and Mary Gibbs Owens, niece Regina Lang, and nephews Reginald Culbreth and Robert Talley.
