Peggy Ann Chambers

Peggy Ann Sheffield Chambers passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026, at Bainbridge Memorial Hospital, with her children by her side.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Colquitt, Georgia, with Dr. Craig Hartzog and Rev. Cory Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at Union Primitive Cemetery. Anthony Cobb, Matthew Sheffield, Brooks Garland, Owen Cobb, Will Snider, and Israel Houston will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Colquitt.

Peggy was born November 26, 1946, in Colquitt, Georgia, to Brooks Sheffield and Annie Laura Smith Sheffield. She attended Miller County High School and was a proud member of the Class of 1964. During her school years, Peggy was a junior varsity football and basketball cheerleader and a standout defender for the Pirettes varsity basketball team.

Peggy’s working career was as diverse as the many talents she possessed. She worked as a nursing assistant for Dr. Robert Starling at Seminole Memorial Hospital in Donalsonville, a bookkeeper for Miller County Hospital, secretary and bookkeeper for Chambers Farm Service, counter manager for Estée Lauder Cosmetics, pharmacy technician for Rite Aid Pharmacy, customer service representative for Bainbridge National Bank, and finally, store manager for Cedar Head Farms—all while being a devoted homemaker and caring for her family.

After her professional career, Peggy took on perhaps one of her most meaningful roles: the unofficial caretaker and nurse for many members of her family. She spent countless hours driving loved ones to and from doctors’ appointments, trips that were often followed by a favorite meal and, whenever possible, a little shopping. Caring for others came naturally to Peggy, and she gave generously of her time, attention, and love.

Peggy was a devout Christian whose faith was an important part of her life. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Colquitt, where she loved singing in the choir and served on various church committees. Peggy and her husband, Carlton, initiated and taught the church’s first couple’s Sunday School class. She also devoted many years to working with the youth and leading the children’s choir.

Some of Peggy’s greatest joys were found in life’s simplest and most meaningful moments—sitting around the table with a cup of coffee and “visiting,” spending time with family and friends, and having those she loved gathered together for special occasions. Family beach trips held an especially treasured place in her heart.

Peggy shared 61 years of marriage with the love of her life, Carlton. Their love story began one evening at the county fair when Carlton spotted what he believed was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. He gave Peggy a ticket for a free ride on the swings, and, as they say, the rest was history. From that simple beginning came more than six decades of marriage, a beautiful family, and a lifetime of memories.

Peggy was a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her greatest legacy will be the family she loved so deeply and the countless lives she touched through her kindness, faith, generosity, and willingness to care for others.

She is survived by her daughter, Carla Chambers Smith (Tim) of Bainbridge, Georgia; her son, Carlton Broxson “Broc” Chambers, Jr. (Kelly) of Azle, Texas; her grandchildren, Morgan Snider (Will) of Chelsea, Alabama, Chancellor Chambers of Goshen, Arkansas, Callahan Rutherford (Dane) of Lubbock, Texas, Ty Smith (Colleen) and Ryals Smith of Bainbridge, Georgia; and her great-grandchildren, Tripp, Davis Brooks, and Boone Snyder, and Brown Rutherford.

She is also survived by her sister, Alice Cobb; her brother, Bill Sheffield (Angie); and many special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carlton Chambers; her parents, Brooks and Ann Sheffield; and her sister, Veryl Garland Cockey.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Ebenezer Chapel renovation project at First Baptist Church Colquitt.
